Author Abanindranath Tagore is a famous Indian painter, aesthetist and writer. Poet Rabindranath Tagore was his paternal uncle. He was born on 7 August 1871 in Jorasanko Thakurbari. He started his studies in Sanskrit College in 1881 AD and completed his studies in Sanskrit College till 1889 AD. He was later appointed assistant principal of the Calcutta Art School in 1896. He was the first among the Indians to get this status.
King George V and Queen Mary visited India in 1911. During a visit to the art gallery, they were given the task of teaching them about Oriental art. An exhibition of paintings by Abanindranath Tagore was held in London in 1913. The British government was impressed by his paintings at the exhibition and awarded him a CIE.

He was not only a painter, he wrote many books. He has written about 370 books including stories, poems, letters, travelogues and memoirs. His notable literary works include Rajkahini, Shakuntala, Kshir’s Putul, Nalak, Pathe Bipathe, Jorasanko Dhare, Apan Kotha, Gharoya, Buro Angla, Nahush, Alor Fulki, Rangberang, Priyadarshika, Bharat Shilpa’s Saranga, ‘Ake Tin Tine Ek’ etc. .
Writer Abanindranath Tagore gained a special reputation in the country as a multi-talented painter, sculptor and writer and played a leading role in various events at home and abroad on the subject of painting and sculpture.
The people of Bengal realized the importance of his versatile painting art much later. He passed away in December 1951 at the age of 80.
