Gaudiya Grammar (or Gauriya Byakaran) was the first complete Bengali grammar book written by a Bengali, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, and published in 1833 by the Calcutta School-Book Society. Based on an earlier English version, Roy’s grammar systematically codified Bengali language, introducing concepts like sounds, letters, gender, inflection, and syntax, while importantly departing from traditional Sanskrit-based grammar rules to establish a distinct standard for the Bengali language.

Author and Purpose

Ram Mohan Roy was the founder and philosopher of the Bengal Renaissance. Ram Mohan Roy was born in a noble and Brahmin family in the village of Radhanagar in Hooghly district. He founded the Brahmo Samaj for the purpose of religious and social reconstruction. Before leaving for England on August 20, 1828, he jointly established the Brahmo Samaj with Dwarkanath Tagore (grandfather of the world poet Rabindranath Tagore).

Later, this Brahmo Samaj served as a social and religious movement and the forerunner of the revival of Bengal. He was able to have a significant impact on the politics, public administration, religion and education of that time. He is especially famous for the abolition of the practice of Sati.

Talobakar Upanishad – “Talobakar Upanishad (June 1816)” refers to the translation of an Upanishad published by Raja Rammohan Roy in June 1816. This translation is actually a translation of the ‘Ken Upanishad‘ or ‘Talavakara Upanishad‘, which is part of the Samaveda. It was an important work by Raja Ram Mohan Roy, which was published to enhance the ease of understanding of the Upanishads in modern times.

The ‘Ken Upanishad‘ or ‘Talavakara Upanishad’ is included in the Talavakara Brahmana of the Samaveda. It is considered one of the ten main Upanishads.

Contribution of Raja Rammohan Roy: Raja Rammohan Roy published a translation of this Upanishad in June 1816. He did this with the aim of removing the obscurity of the Upanishads and making them easy for the common people to understand.

Importance: This translation by Raja Rammohan Roy is important because it made a deep philosophical text of the Vedas accessible to the common people.

Motivation: Rammohan Roy took up this work at the request of the Calcutta Schoolbook Society and due to the need to write a grammar for students.

Language and Work: First he wrote a grammar of Bengali language in English, titled ‘Bengali Grammar in the English Language’. Later, on the basis of this English grammar, he wrote ‘Gauriya Byakaran’ in Bengali.
